of Menton

April 12-14, 2024

Menton means chin in French. Luckily for me, it also means a place where Louis studies political science, a place on the Côte d’Azur, a place easily accessible via direct flight from Prague to Nice, and a place where sun is close and the water is salty salty salty.

Did you want to know something? En fait, I breathed the air of 3 different countries on this 2-day trip. That’s right, northern Italia is a short walk from Menton, and Monaco is like, right there, too. The respective airs tasted more or less the same— yet another piece of evidence proving that this whole “country” thing is a JOKE. This is hard-hitting journalism, folks. I’m keeping my finger on the pulse of air taste differential on a country-to-country basis. You have my word.

Something great: hanging out. And boy, did we hang out on this trip! Just 3 kids from a little something called Baltimore and a little something in that little something called the tri-school, hanging out. Gabbing.

Side note: I need to say that airplanes are deceivingly mundane in abstraction and astonishing in reality. Yes, perhaps on the surface it’s the inverse (wow, flying!) (I can’t carry-on more than 1000ml of liquids max and the liquids must live in a container that is 100ml max). In essence, though, flying itself does not stretch the reality-band in one’s mind; rather, it’s the speed of air-travel that is utterly gobsmacking. It feels like complete witchcraft: the places of the world are far away and yet, you pop over the Atlantic in a matter of hours. You arrive in a small French town near the Italian border, a third or fourth degree from home. You see Louis there (a second degree for him) and Maggie (an entirely different fourth degree). Magic. Air pollution, sure, but magic!

In Menton, there are a loads of Italians speaking French. So that’s fun!

Here’s some photos. Voici quelques photos.
